Question

I switched bot protection on for one of my keys and I honestly can't tell what changed. Nothing looks different when I load my site. Is it working?

It's working on you the same way it works on everyone — quietly. A real browser gets a short challenge it solves by itself, so you see nothing. What you're not seeing is the traffic that failed it.

One thing worth checking: the toggle configures the check, the snippet is what calls it. If you turned it on but haven't pasted the snippet onto the site, nothing is being asked about anything and the setting genuinely does nothing. The key page tells you if it has never seen a call.

That was exactly it, no snippet. Pasted it in and the counter started moving. Blocked 40-odd requests in the first hour, which is more than I expected on a site nobody knows about.

That's about typical. Most of it is untargeted scanning, not anyone interested in you specifically.
